OPeNDAP allows one to give a application a url and have it directly download data. To read this data into matlab use 
loaddap('http://45.183.221.150/SOURCES/.Features/.Political/.World/.Countries_ESRI/gmi_cntry/1+index/.objectid_1/dods')
